Worker falls six metres in ‘preventable’ accident at Edgbaston cricket ground
Two leading construction companies appeared in court (10th December 2012) and pleaded guilty to breaching s3(1) of the HSWA 1974 following a sub contractor falling six metres and sustaining life changing injuries. Ian Howells was moving a heavy floor grinder when he stepped on what he believed to be a pile of wood covered by plastic. Unaware that the pallet actually concealed a service void, Mr Howell fell to the floor below and injuries included a punctured lung and fractured pelvis preventing him from returning to work for one year.
HSE Inspector Paul Thompson stated that the incident was entirely preventable and that neither contractor had carried out a risk assessment.
